Paul Robinson has claimed Jed Steer will be cutting a frustrated figure at Aston Villa ahead of the January window.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-England and Tottenham goalkeeper explained how the Villa number two may be plotting a winter window exit.
Steer, 27, was the first choice in goal for the second half of last season and integral to the club’s successful promotion bid but the summer signing of Tom Heaton has pushed him back down the pecking order.
Robinson believes the Norwich City academy product will benefit from the experienced Heaton’s influence but, privately, he may be itching for a transfer.
“You get to work in the Premier League with the likes of Tom and other players so, that will be a bonus,” Robinson told Football Insider. “But I think, yes, he will be frustrated and it just depends on his patience and how long he’s willing to wait.
Asked if Steer might push for a January exit, Robinson replied: “Yes, he could. It depends on where he sees his career at. He’s at an age where he might think he should be playing regularly.”
A Villa source has told Football Insider that Steer would not be short of offers if he did look to quit, as multiple clubs in the Premier League and Championship are keeping tabs on his situation.
He has made 30 Villa appearances since signing in 2013, but has played on loan for the likes of Huddersfield Town and Charlton Athletic.
