Robinson in awe of 'brilliant' Romero after Tottenham update from journalist

Paul Robinson is thrilled to hear Tottenham are closing in on the signing of Atalanta defender Cristian Romero.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former White Hart Lane number one claimed the 23-year-old “will be a brilliant signing” who could bring much needed leadership to the dressing room.

According to Fabrizio Romano (August 4th), the centre-half has flown to London for the second part of his medical before signing a five-year deal.

It comes after Nuno Espirito Santo’s side agreed a fee in the region of £47million with Atalanta for the Argentina international.

Spurs are undergoing a defensive overhaul in this window, with Toby Alderweireld leaving for Al-Duhail and Davinson Sanchez and Eric Dier also reportedly up for sale.

When asked by Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs for his thoughts on the imminent arrival of Romero, Robinson said:

“I saw him in the Copa America and I really liked what I saw. He is a really tough defender. I have been very impressed with what I have seen from him.

“Argentinians are known for their no nonsense, strong defending and I think he is built in that mould.

“I think he will be a brilliant signing. Hopefully he can bring the leadership and winning mentality that is needed in that dressing room.”

Romero has been capped five times by Argentina and three of those came on his country’s way to the Copa America title last month.

Spurs begin their Premier League campaign against Manchester City on Sunday August 15th.
