Robinson issues ‘100 per cent’ Tottenham transfer verdict after £116m reveal

Paul Robinson has backed Antonio Conte to have Tottenham on the same level as Man City by the end of the 2023-34 campaign.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Spurs and England number one said the Lilywhites’ squad is twice as good as it was 12 months ago.

Tottenham have made an impressive start to the 2022-23 campaign and only Arsenal have more points in the Premier League.

Speaking to Sky Sports (3 September), Conte admitted rival spending makes it very difficult for Spurs to challenge for the title this season.

The ex-Chelsea boss suggested three more windows are needed for the London club to compete with the best.

According to CIES Football Observatory (2 September), Tottenham’s net spend in 2022 is £116milion.

Chelsea, Newcastle, Man United, West Ham and Nottingham Forest are the only English clubs with a higher net spend.

When asked by Football Insider if Spurs need three transfer windows to compete, Robinson said: “It is going to be very difficult.

“If anybody can do it, it is Conte though. When you look at the recruitment and the backing he has had, it is promising. If Spurs were to have another two or three windows like that, 100 per cent they will be up there.

“That is where Spurs want to be. They have wanted to be there for a long time. There is a realistic chance of doing that.

“[Cristian] Romero, [Rodrigo] Bentancur and [Dejan] Kulusevski have been brilliant. Conte’s had two windows and has improved the squad greatly.

“There is still a couple of positions that need strengthening but it is taking shape. Without a doubt the squad is twice as strong as this time last year.”
