Robinson issues 'big' Aston Villa claim after update on Hasenhuttl appointment

Aston Villa fans would be unimpressed by the appointment of Ralph Hasenhuttl as he would not be a “big upgrade” on Dean Smith.

That is the view of former Premier League goalkeeper Paul Robinson, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the vacant position at Villa Park.

Aston Villa announced on Sunday that Smith had been sacked with immediate effect.

According to The Telegraph (7th November), Southampton’s Ralph Hasenhuttl is a candidate to take over, while Football Insider has been told that John Terry and Steven Gerrard are the top targets.

Hasenhuttl, 54, endured a difficult start to the season at St. Mary’s but his side have picked up 10 points from a possible 12 since.

His current contract on the south coast runs until the summer of 2024.

When asked by Football Insider for his thoughts on Hasenhuttl’s credentials for the vacant Villa post, Robinson said:

“Southampton are a model of inconsistency. They were top of the league for part of last season and then narrowly avoided relegation.

“I tipped them for relegation this year and in the early season, it looked likely but now they have picked up again. Stability and consistency are not words used when talking about Southampton.

“Ralph Hasenhuttl has done a decent job there. I like the way they play.

“But, would I be excited if Hasenhuttl came in? I don’t think so as he’s not a big upgrade on Dean Smith.”

Hasenhuttl has won 47 of his 127 games in charge of the Saints.

He has also managed RB Leipzig and FC Ingolstadt in Germany.
