Paul Robinson has insisted Eric Dier will be celebrating Tottenham sacking Mauricio Pochettino.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Spurs and England goalkeeper claimed the exit of Pochettino is “good news” for the 25-year-old.

Dier has been a fringe player at Tottenham in the past two seasons and has made just two Premier League starts among six appearances this season.

Robinson is in no doubt that a change of manager can reignite the career of a player who was pursued by Jose Mourinho when he was Manchester United manager.

“I think it’s great news for Eric Dier that somebody else has come in, whether it was Mourinho, no matter who it was,” Robinson told Football Insider.

“He was going stale, he was going backwards under Pochettino. He wasn’t getting the game time, he wasn’t a regular starter, he was playing centre-half which I don’t think he enjoyed.

“He’s a central midfielder but I think it was a case of he was getting put in the team to play wherever at that point.

“It’s just good news for Eric Dier there’s been a change in the manager, giving him a clean slate and opportunity to push for a starting berth again.”

Dier was Pochettino’s first signing when he joined in the summer of 2014 from Sporting Lisbon for £4.5million.

He has been a big hit at Tottenham, making 216 appearances for the club as well as going on to represent the senior England side 40 times.
