Paul Robinson has heaped praise on Allan McGregor after the Rangers goalkeeper signed a new one-year deal.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Spurs and England number one said the 39-year-old is in “the best form of his life” and has been a “huge part” of Steven Gerrard’s side’s success this season.

Rangers confirmed last Thursday that the experienced shot-stopper has put pen to paper on a new 12-month deal – his previous contract was set to expire this summer.

McGregor has kept a staggering 20 clean sheets in 37 appearances across all competitions this season.

Robinson, who is friends with and a former teammate of Gerrard, believes the 42-times Scotland international could even extend his time at Ibrox by another year at the end of next season.

“His new contract is hugely deserved,” he told Football Insider.

“He has had an outstanding season and has been so integral to their success this season.

“I think he is in the best form of his life and I do not see why he could not sign another deal in 12 months time if he has a similar season to what he had this year.

“He has been a huge part of what Steven has created over the past few seasons both on and off the field. He has had such an impact in the dressing room, he really is one of the most important figures in that squad.”

Speaking after signing his new contract, McGregor said: “I didn’t really need convincing.

“It was more that my body felt okay and performances seemed okay, so why not?”
