Robinson ‘surprised’ by Newcastle United after journalist’s Allan Saint-Maximin update

Paul Robinson is “surprised” Newcastle United would listen to offers of around £40million for Allan Saint-Maximin this summer.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Spurs and England number one said the Magpies would struggle to replace the 25-year-old for that amount of money.

According to The Athletic‘s Chris Waugh (19 July), Tottenham and Chelsea have made enquiries for the French winger.

However, Newcastle’s £40million valuation of the player is said to have extinguished any serious interest in the player.

Saint-Maximin has four years remaining on his contract at St. James’ Park.

When asked by Football Insider for his thoughts on Eddie Howe’s side potentially allowing Saint-Maximin to leave for £40million, Robinson said: “I’m surprised they would consider letting him go.

“They have to let Eddie Howe do what he wants with that squad though.

“One thing is for sure, Newcastle have to keep an eye on financial fair play over the next couple of years. There is funds there and they are going to invest in the squad. It is all well and good spending but you have to balance the books and toe the line of financial fair play.

“I think Saint-Maximin is a top-class player. If you sell him for £40million I think you would struggle to replace like-for-like with that money.

“I think they could get more than £40million. It would be a good buy for somebody at that price.”

In other news, Kieran Maguire has claimed Newcastle United now have the ‘perfect’ Amanda Staveley ally as new deal agreed.
