Bentancur banned at Tottenham as reason for Enzo Fernandez escape emerges

Tottenham midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur has been handed a seven-game ban for comments made about teammate Son Heung-min, the FA have confirmed.

Bentancur was charged by the FA back in September for comments he made about Son while appearing on a TV show in his native Uruguay over the summer.

Although the Uruguayan international denied the charge, a statement from the FA revealed an Independent Regulatory Commission has found it to be proven.

As a result, they have imposed that seven-game ban on Bentancur, who will also have to pay a £100,000 fine for his comments.

According to a report from the BBC, due to the fact the midfielder plays in England, and he was on his own time when making the comments, the issue is under the jurisdiction of the FA.

That is in contrast to the situation with Enzo Fernandez, who the French FA have alleged used a “racist and discriminatory” chant in a video he posted while celebrating Argentina’s Copa America success.

Due to the fact the Chelsea midfielder – who remains available for Enzo Maresca’s side – was on international duty at the time of that incident, it is instead being investigated by FIFA.

Football Insider Opinion

The absence of Bentancur will most likely be keenly felt at Tottenham over the course of the coming weeks.

The midfielder has been an impressive performer for Spurs so far this season, and he will be a miss for some tough games they have to come.

He is due to miss Premier League games against the likes of Man City, Fulham, Bournemouth, Chelsea, Southampton and Liverpool.

As well as that, he will also be unable to feature in the Carabao Cup Quarter Final against Manchester United next month.

With the defeat at home to Ipswich Town last time out – in which Bentancur scored – highlighting their inconsistencies this season, losing a key player this season may be a problem for Tottenham.

Manager Ange Postecoglu also seems to have put pressure on himself with his claims of always winning a trophy in his second season, and this will make life harder for him too in that sense.

So from a footballing perspective at least, this suspension for Bentancur is something that Tottenham could have well done without.

In other news, Paul Robinson has made a prediction about Ange Postecoglou being sacked by Tottenham.
