Rodrigo Bentancur: Tottenham insider reminded of ‘Berbatov’ by hardly-seen Spurs player

Rodrigo Bentancur is an “excellent acquisition” by Tottenham and can be the club’s new Dimitar Berbatov.

That is according to Spurs insider John Wenham, who regularly breaks news about the club on his Lilywhite Rose social media channels.

Bentancur, 24, started his first Tottenham game as his new side lost 2-0 to Wolves on Sunday (13 February).

He has made two other appearances, both off the bench against Brighton in the FA Cup (6 February) and Southampton (9 February).

Wenham was reminded of Spurs icon Berbatov after watching the midfielder’s full debut.

“Well he’s played two league games and we have lost them both,” Wenham told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“In all seriousness, as soon as he came on against Southampton, he reminded me of Berbatov.

“This is going to sound odd because they play different positions but he has that elegant style about him.

“I know it sounds strange but it feels like he’s always on time and has great composure. He’s just like Berbatov in that he takes his time doing things but he’s always in control if that makes sense.

“From what I have seen I think he will be an excellent acquisition and it’s positive that Conte feels he can already start Premier League games.

“I’m looking forward to seeing him in the midfield with Skipp and Hojbjerg or maybe even just Skipp. I think that will work well.”

Tottenham

Tottenham announced the permanent signing of Bentancur from Juventus on deadline day.

He left Juventus after making 181 appearances for the club.
