Rodriguez tipped to push for Everton exit after confirmed news - ex-striker

Gabby Agbonlahor has suggested James Rodriguez may want to leave Everton this summer.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Aston Villa and England forward suggested the attacker may not want to work under Rafael Benitez at Goodison Park.

Rogriguez moved to Everton last summer to be reunited with his former Real Madrid and Bayern Munich manager Carlo Ancelotti.

However, Ancelotti rejoined Real Madrid last month and was replaced by Benitez.

Rodriguez worked with Benitez at Real Madrid and the pair had a strained relationship in the Spanish capital.

The Daily Mail reported on 23 June, before Benitez’s appointment, that the Colombia international is being offered to European clubs.

It is claimed his agent Jorge Mendes has offered the 29-year-old to Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid, Napoli and AC Milan.

“I just don’t really see him as Rafa Benitez’s type of player,” Agbonlahor told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.

“I just don’t see it. Because Ancelotti’s left he might want to leave now.

“Benitez might look at James Rodriguez, he might fancy him, he might not. It depends what football he wants to play.

“And Rodriguez himself, he might want to leave now Ancelotti’s gone. It will be interesting to see what happens there.”

Rodriguez showed flashes of brilliance at Everton last season but he struggled towards the end of the season with form and fitness.

He ended the campaign six goals and nine assists in 26 appearances across all competitions.

His current contract expires in the summer of 2022 and Everton have the option to extend the deal by a further 12 months.
