Ronald Koeman makes shock Everton transfer admission

By Matt Farr

Everton manager Ronald Koeman fears his side could miss out on their major transfer targets next month.

The admission will come as a shock to Everton fans hoping for quality reinforcements after a stuttering start to the season.

The Toffees have made a below-par start to the new season, and find themselves in ninth place in the Premier League, with just six wins from 17 games.

Koeman’s side have won just twice in their last 10 games, and the Dutchman is keen to bring in some new names when the transfer window re-opens in less than a week’s time.

The club have been linked with a host of names, including Manchester United outcasts Memphis Depay and Morgan Schneiderlin, but according to the Daily Star, Koeman admits that a lack of European football for Everton could make the club a hard sell.

Everton made it to the Champions League qualifying stages under David Moyes in 2005, but have failed to qualify for the tournament since, while their 2014-15 Europa League campaign ended in disappointment.

Yet despite his candid comments, Koeman is still looking to compete with the big-guns for his top targets.

Koeman told the Daily Star: “Players want to be involved in the Champions League.

“We need to show as Everton that it’s really an interesting prospect. But once again, if you have the competition against those kind of teams then it’s always difficult.”

Everton appeared to be on the verge of signing Newcastle’s Moussa Sissoko in the summer, only to be stumped at the last minute by Tottenham – who had Champions League football to offer.

The Sun has claimed that Koeman now wants to bring Virgil van Dijk to Goodison Park, a move that would see him having to fend off the likes of Manchester City and Juventus.

Both City and Juventus are through to the knockout-stages of the Champions League in February, but Everton do a have a small advantage in that van Dijk played under Koeman at Southampton.

The Toffees travel to Leicester on Boxing Day in their next Premier League encounter.
