Ruben Amorim can equal unwanted history for Man United as Tottenham eye 23-year record

Tottenham host Manchester United in a mouth-watering Premier League showdown on Saturday (November 8), and there is more at stake than just bragging rights.

The two sides are currently locked in 17 points and boast identical records, winning five, drawing two and losing three of their first 10 matches.

Last time out, Man United were held to a 2-2 draw by Nottingham Forest, while Spurs were beaten 1-0 by Chelsea, with Thomas Frank’s men only ahead of the visitors on goal difference.

But it’s Ruben Amorim’s men who arrive the fresher of the two teams since they don’t have any European commitments, whereas Tottenham smashed Copenhagen 4-0 on Tuesday and have had three fewer days to rest.

As an exciting contest takes centre stage in north London, United will be hoping they avoid creating unwanted history.

Tottenham can equal a 23-year Liverpool record vs Man United

As highlighted by BBC Sport, Man United are winless in their last seven meetings against Spurs in all competitions, drawing two and losing five.

Remarkably, the Red Devils have lost their last four in a row in this fixture, and the last team to win five in a row against United was Liverpool between 2000 and 2002.

But Amorim does have encouragement to prevent unwanted history from unfolding, as no team has lost more Premier League home matches than Tottenham in 2025 (9).

So, with a four-match unbeaten streak under their belt, the visitors are least prepared to break their recent woeful run and climb into the Champions League places with a victory.

Ruben Amorim highlights Man United confidence

Although Man United threw away three points against Forest last time out, there are clear signs that Amorim’s principles and tactics are slowly falling into place.

Amorim was under sack pressure at the start of October after his side lost to Brentford, and now, the future is looking bright for the Portuguese boss.

With the likes of Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha and Bruno Fernandes all flourishing, the 40-year-old has highlighted the confidence that is flowing in the dressing room.

“I think we are more confident. We believe more that we can win any game and we prove already that we can win any game,” Amorim said in his press conference.

“The last game was tough on us because in some moments we weren’t the team we were supposed to be in every minute. And compare that against Brighton, it was a different thing.

“We cannot forget we have a lot to improve. We are more prepared for anything to happen in a game. But we also know that we have a lot to do and improve to win more these kind of games and consistently win. We are capable and confident, but sometimes struggle in games that we need to do better.”

There’s still a lot for United to improve, of course, but when in full flow, they are a joy to watch and Amorim deserves credit for that.
