Ruben Amorim in shock running for Premier League job hours after Man United sack

Ruben Amorim could be set for an instant return to Premier League management just hours after leaving Manchester United.

Manchester United sacked Amorim on Monday, after the Portuguese coach had spoken out about those above him following a draw with Leeds United on Sunday.

The 40-year-old reiterated that he came to Old Trafford to be the manager not the coach, and stormed out of his press conference.

Darren Fletcher has taken interim charge of Manchester United following Amorim‘s dismissal, with the former midfielder set to lead the team against Burnley on Wednesday.

Football Insider revealed on Tuesday that Michael Carrick could potentially join Fletcher at Manchester United, with a permanent appointment likely to follow in the summer.

Ruben Amorim named in West Ham race

West Ham will sack Nuno Espirito Santo if his side lose to Nottingham Forest on Monday, sources have told Football Insider.

Decision-makers at the London Stadium were already paying serious consideration to the idea, with the Hammers without a win since the start of November.

But defeat to Sean Dyche‘s side on Monday would see Nuno‘s team place one foot in the Championship.

West Ham would be seven points away from safety, and with the form of both teams and Leeds United taken into account, relegation would appear very likely.

David Sullivan may well attempt one final throw of the dice in that case, and, incredibly, Amorim’s exit from Manchester United has seen him enter the bookies’ race to replace Nuno.

The former Sporting CP coach is at 6/1 odds of taking over at the London Stadium, with Slaven Bilic (4/7) and Carrick (2/1) still leading the way, according to one major bookmaker.

Amorim almost joined West Ham in 2024

Before his arrival at Manchester United later that year, Amorim had entered brief talks to join West Ham at the end of the 2023-24 season.

Reports of the talks had emerged in the media, before the head coach himself confirmed them in a public apology to the Sporting CP fans.

“So, let’s get the elephant out of the room and I’ll talk about it once,” Amorim said in April 2024. “The first thing is to say that the club was aware of my trip. It’s important and changes the context.

“Then, let’s talk about the ‘cloak of secrecy’ that surrounded the trip… I ‘secretly parked the car outside’, ‘secretly walked past 15 people, and took photographs’, and ‘got on a plane that was all done behind the club’s back’. It didn’t happen in secret or without permission.

“Obviously my trip was a mistake, the timing was completely wrong, it didn’t seem right at the time. It was wrong, especially when I’m so demanding with my players and always the first to say that each one’s actions can overpower the team.”

West Ham ultimately hired Julen Lopetegui in May 2024, but things could be about to go full circle with both parties suddenly in need of a change.
