Ruben Amorim is in dangerous territory at Man United as data highlights two managers close to sack

Ruben Amorim is edging closer to the sack at Man United if he does not get a grip of one troubling problem.

Amorim has yet to improve results at Old Trafford, and the Red Devils have suffered a poor start to the new campaign under his leadership.

Man City’s 3-0 win over Man United in the derby showcased the Red Devils continue to be defensively fragile and Amorim’s system is currently causing major problems.

Amorim may point to Man United’s new signing Benjamin Sesko not yet being up to full match sharpness to address the lack of goals in his side, but early matches indicate the Portuguese should also have done more to address their defensive issues.

Man United’s woeful set-piece record

One glaring problem that Amorim needs to fix at Man United is their inability to defend set-pieces.

Only West Ham and Wolves conceded more goals from set-pieces than Man United since the 2024-25 season.

Altay Bayindir’s blunder against Arsenal highlighted the problem on matchday one, and even though Man United signed Senne Lammens, we are yet to find out whether the 23-year-old can help solve the issue.

A strong goalkeeper is the first step in being able to defend set-pieces, especially corners, and it perhaps comes as a surprise that Man United have conceded so many, considering they play with three central defenders.

Aside from Harry Maguire though, Amorim doesn’t look to have a dominant centre-back in his squad with a strong arial presence, something he should have changed during the transfer window.

How Ruben Amorim compares to Graham Potter

Amorim is not the only Premier League manager currently under pressure, though he doesn’t fare much better than West Ham counterpart Graham Potter.

Both managers have the same problem of being unable to keep the ball out of the net, which ultimately hinders their chances of winning matches.

Both managers are similar in that they want to try and implement a system that their current squad cannot cater to.

Neither seem to have the answers to change the situations they both find themselves in and are under close scrutiny from their club’s hierarchy.

Victories and better performances need to come in the upcoming matches or both will face the sack.
