Ruben Amorim: The real reason Man United haven’t sacked manager revealed

Ruben Amorim has been subject to plenty of speculation about his future amid ongoing calls for him to be sacked by Man United.

Despite Man United’s 2-1 victory against Chelsea at Old Trafford on 20 September, questions are still being asked about Amorim‘s future at the helm.

However, Football Insider revealed on 19 September that Man United are not planning to sack Amorim and remain keen for him to turn around their fortunes.

As I revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, financial restrictions are believed to be playing a key role in their decision.

Sources say United are reluctant to spend big on sacking Amorim due to profit and sustainability concerns, after reports claimed his dismissal could cost £12million. [Daily Mail]

Man United make Ruben Amorim sack decision

Former United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider on 15 September that Man United chiefs are losing patience with Amorim and his methods.

However, the club’s hierarchy remain reluctant to pull the trigger given the financial implications of the decision and the situation the club is in behind the scenes.

PSR and FFP have limited the club’s activity despite a busy summer transfer window, and the owners have been clear in their plans to avoid unnecessary spending.

Speaking on the Inside Track podcast, I explained: “The club went and spent big to get Amorim, and spent big to sack Erik ten Hag, so they want to stick with their man.

“They don’t want to have to sack him right now, they want to give him time to try and get things right.

“They backed him in the transfer window with a number of big-money signings as well, so they want to give him time to see if he can improve.

“The other thing you have to look at is that it will cost Man United a lot of money now to sack Amorim.

“He’s under a long-term contract and United don’t really want to do that having done that in the past, when they’ve been getting rid of managers, it has cost them a lot of money financially.

“And especially with PSR and FFP, you can’t really go out and afford to sack managers costing you whatever double figures in millions.”

Sir Jim Ratcliffe has taken extreme measures to cut costs over the last year, and paying out Amorim’s long contract is not part of his plans.

INEOS cost-cutting clear as Man United make Amorim decision

Man United’s financial situation has been subject to plenty of scrutiny in recent months after a number of controversial decisions made behind the scenes.

Ratcliffe claimed earlier this year United would have gone “bust by Christmas” if it wasn’t for his intensive cost-cutting measures after their partial takeover.

Meanwhile, Brown told Football Insider in December 2024 that INEOS have left Man United staff stunned with decisions to sack over 250 long-serving employees.

The United hierarchy have been determined to cut spending by any means necessary, and handing Amorim a significant payout is not part of their plans.

Football Insider revealed on 18 September that Man United paid over £36million in compensation last season by sacking Ten Hag and triggering staff redundancies.
