Ruben Amorim: The truth about West Ham talks revealed

West Ham were not close to appointing new Man United boss Ruben Amorim earlier this year despite face-to-face talks with David Sullivan, sources have told Football Insider.

Amorim enraged Sporting CP chiefs by flying to London in April to discuss the possibility of taking the job at the London Stadium.

However, sources say those discussions went no further and an offer was not made – with the 39-year-old feeling he was not the right fit for the role.

It is believed West Ham were always punching above their weight in their quest to make Amorim the replacement for David Moyes.

Some fans on social media are rueing the missed opportunity but it is understood that a deal was never close.

The Portuguese boss has confirmed he “didn’t go to negotiate” with the Irons in April – but simply to “meet the owner”.

He has now taken the job at Man United after Erik ten Hag’s sacking and will start work on 11 November ahead of his first game on 24 November.

West Ham instead appointed Julen Lopetegui to replace Moyes in the off-season and the Spaniard has started poorly at the London Stadium.

The Irons sit 14th in the Premier League table after winning just three of their opening 10 games this term.

Lopetegui and Tim Steidten spent big in the summer window but the Spanish boss is already under serious sack pressure at the London Stadium.
