‘Ruben Amorim’s statement really surprised me – Man United fans could now turn on him’

Ruben Amorim was inconsolable after Man United’s 2-0 home loss against West Ham on Sunday (11 May).

United boss Amorim, 40, even hinted at a shock potential departure, exactly six months after his arrival at Old Trafford.

He said: “We should give the space to different people” if he cannot transform the culture at the club – claiming United are no longer afraid of losing games.

The West Ham clash was a dead rubber for the Red Devils – who face Tottenham in the Europa League final in Bilbao next week (21 May).

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – claimed Amorim’s comments will have “used up one of his lives” with the United fanbase.

‘Man United pressure getting to Amorim’ after new comments, says Wyness

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness insisted Amorim hinting at a future exit was a “big mistake” and “showed his inexperience”.

United are 16th in the Premier League table with Amorim overseeing just six wins in 25 top-flight games.

Wyness insisted Sir Jim Ratcliffe will “find it very difficult to make another change” in the Old Trafford dugout.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “The comments were very odd and showed his inexperience.

“It showed the pressure was getting to him. Going into the game, which they lost, everyone expected them to lose and have their mind elsewhere.

“It was no real surprise, people had already factored that in.

“For him to come out with that statement about leaving the club really surprised me.

“Managers only have so many lives, like cats. When you use up one of your lives with the fans on something like this, it can have a real impact.

“It was a big mistake to say that. People would’ve understood the result considering the final coming up.

“I think it shows the pressure getting to him. We all know things haven’t gone right, but from all I understand he has been given big backing from Ratcliffe – who will find it very difficult to make another change.

Amorim sack update from Man United

Football Insider revealed on 12 May that Amorim is fully expected to be in charge at Man United at the start of the 2025-26 campaign – even if they lose the Europa League final against Tottenham.

It is believed the Red Devils have drawn up a long-term plan with Amorim and they are not considering parting company with the Portuguese boss.

His contract at Old Trafford is set to run until June 2027 after his mid-season arrival from Sporting CP.
