‘Ruining football’, ‘Complete joke’ – Fans react to Jamie Carragher tweet amid rage over Liverpool VAR drama

Fans raged on Saturday after VAR took over four minutes to overturn a penalty given to Crystal Palace in their 2-1 Premier League defeat to Liverpool.

The Reds left it late to steal all three points and go top of the Premier League table but their 11th win of the season was marked by huge VAR drama.

Palace were awarded a penalty in the first half after Odsonne Edouard was fouled by Virgil van Dijk, but the decision was overturned by VAR after referee Andy Madley was recommended to take an on-pitch review.

Will Hughes was adjudged to have fouled Wataru Endo in the build-up, resulting in the penalty being retracted and Van Dijk’s yellow card rescinded.

However, fans on social media were left unhappy about the VAR process with the decision taking over four minutes to be completed.

Palace were awarded another penalty in the second half which was converted by Jean-Philippe Mateta, but second-half goals from Mohamed Salah and Harvey Elliott rescued all three points for Jurgen Klopp’s side.

Ex-Liverpool star and pundit Jamie Carragher took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to complain about the prolonged VAR process.

Fans were quick to agree with Carragher’s comments, with complaints flooding in about the speed of the VAR process.

Some fans called VAR a ‘complete joke’ after it was revealed that the decision took four minutes and 12 seconds to be completed.

This fan pointed out that the decision seems to have the same outcome everytime a referee is sent over for an on-pitch review.

Others called for the Premier League to release audio for the decision so fans can understand the reasons behind the delay.

This supporter believes Madley was shown over 13 replays of the offence before coming to his decision…
