Russell Martin to Rangers: Major update from Ibrox today
Russell Martin will be in the running for the Rangers job with Barry Ferguson almost certain to depart at the end of the season, sources have told Football Insider.
Martin, who made 17 appearances on loan with the Gers in 2018, has been widely linked with a return to Ibrox after his sacking at Southampton in December 2024.
The 39-year-old has been linked with a potential move to Leicester and other English Championship roles, but it is believed a potential move north of the border could also appeal to him.
He is likely to feature high on the 49ers Enterprises wanted list, with his attractive brand of football particularly appealing to Rangers’ potential new owners.
Martin ready to return to management amid Rangers interest
Speaking on Gary Lineker’s The Rest Is Football podcast (9 April), Martin insisted he is ready to return to management and is “starting to feel excited” about his next opportunity.
He also revealed his ambition to manage in the Champions League – an opportunity which could become a reality if he takes the job at Rangers.

The former Scotland international defender was dismissed by Southampton after winning just one of 16 Premier League games.
However, he did mastermind the Saints’ promotion to the top-flight a season earlier via the Championship play-offs after revolutionising the club’s style of play.
Martin implemented a possession-heavy philosophy at MK Dons, Swansea and Southampton.

Ferguson unlikely to land permanent Rangers job
Football Insider revealed on Sunday (13 April) Ferguson is unlikely to become Rangers’ next manager permanently unless he wins the Europa League.
His side dropped yet more points with a 2-2 away draw at Aberdeen on Sunday, leaving them 15 points behind rivals Celtic.
Rangers head to the Basque Country on Thursday (17 April) with their Europa League quarter-final tie against Athletic Bilbao finely poised at 0-0 ahead of the second leg.
