Sadio Mane cited as Man City slammed over 'greedy' £60m transfer update - pundit
Noel Whelan has insisted Man City are being “greedy” demanding £50million-plus for Raheem Sterling this summer.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Leeds striker claimed the 27-year-old should be in the same price bracket as Liverpool’s Sadio Mane.
The Telegraph (9 June) claim Sterling could cost suitors £50-60million despite his contract expiring next summer.
The same newspaper report (9 June) Liverpool are demanding £40million for Mane, who is also heading into the final 12 months of his terms at Anfield.
With Sterling able to agree a pre-contract deal with a foreign club in January, Whelan suggested City may need to drop their asking price for Sterling.
Whelan told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “You can look and say is he any better than Sadio Mane? They’re willing to let him go, with a year left on his contract, for £40million. So why would you want to pay over the odds for a player who’s got a year left on his contract?

“He can sign a free contract with a foreign club come January. The power’s in Raheem Sterling’s hands, you can’t be pricing out a player if you really need to get the cash in.
“£40 million is better than none. When you’re looking towards £50-60million, if you’re a big club and you’ve got the money, what’s the point?
“Wait six months, then you can sign him on a free. Those chats between the agent and club can carry on between now and then.
“You don’t want to be pricing somebody out of a move and be greedy. Man City don’t need to be greedy, they need to be sensible over where he goes or where he ends up next.”
