Sadio Mane: Pundit issues '£35m-plus' Liverpool claim after 'ludicrous' Sky update

Noel Whelan has urged Liverpool to demand an up-front fee of £35million-plus for Sadio Mane in negotiations with Bayern Munich.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted there is “no point” accepting a heavily-incentivised deal for the 30-year-old.

As reported by Sky Sports (8 June), Liverpool rejected a bid worth a potential £30million from Bayern, with the Germans wanting to pay just £23.5million up front.

The report claims the other £6.5million would be included as add-ons and bonuses.

Whelan branded the Bundesliga giants’ bid “ludicrous”.

He insisted Liverpool should be holding out for a fee of £35-40million in cash up front.

Whelan told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “You’re not going to let a top-quality player like Mane leave for £25million. I mean, that’s just ludicrous. You’re better off keeping him in that case and giving it another shot for next season.

“They want an out-and-out fee, simple as. When you’re coming into one year of your contract, there’s no point having add-ons, not for a 30-year-old. You want a full-on: ‘This is the money, that’s what we want to pay for him.’

“If it’s not acceptable, then you raise the capital and find it if you desperately want him that bad. Even still, £35-40 million is not a bad bit of business. You know you’re going to probably lose Lewandowski. Where are you going to get the goals from?”

Mane has one year left on his contract at Anfield, meaning the Reds face losing him on a free next summer.

He has played 269 times for the Merseyside giants, with 120 goals under his belt.
