Sakala tipped for Auchenhowie to prove Rangers teammate wrong - McLeish

Alex McLeish has backed Fashion Sakala to prove his Rangers teammates wrong by improving and adapting his game in training.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Gers boss insisted the 24-year-old needs to find a way to beat tight defences this season.

As quoted by the Daily Record (4th November), Arfield claimed Sakala may struggle in “some domestic games” due to teams sitting deep and limiting space.

The Zambia international scored a hat-trick last weekend against Motherwell.

However, he struggled to have the same impact in the 1-1 draw with Brondby in midweek.

The summer signing is known for his pace, which could be nullified if teams play a deep line and limit the space in behind.

McLeish insisted Sakala cannot rely solely on speed to have an impact at Ibrox.

He suggested the striker would need to improve his game at Auchenhowie and prove the likes of Arfield wrong.

“Maybe there’ll be teams sitting deep. Possibly not,” McLeish told Football Insider.

“This is when Sakala has to improve his game on the training ground behind the scenes. How does he beat these defences?

“Quick one-twos, good movement in the box. He’s got that speed over a short distance so there’s no reason why he can’t improve his overall game.

“It’s not just about defences coming up high where he can use his speed to sneak in and get in behind.

“It’s having that technical ability in and around the box to be able to do something different. To be able to beat a tight defence.”

Sakala has scored four goals in 15 appearances for Rangers so far.

Steven Gerrard also has the likes of Alfredo Morelos and Kemar Roofe to call upon at centre-forward.
