Sam McCallum completes Sheffield United move as deal agreed

Sheffield United have agreed a deal to sign Sam McCallum on a free transfer, sources have told Football Insider.

The defender has been undergoing medical checks at the Blades’ training ground on Thursday (11 July) after a full agreement was reached between all parties.

McCallum, 23, left Norwich City upon the expiry of his contract last month and Sheffield United have moved quickly to secure his signature.

After the departures of Max Lowe, Yasser Larouci and Ben Osbourne, a deal to sign a new left-back emerged as a priority at Bramall Lane.

McCallum joined Norwich from Coventry City in January 2020, in a deal worth £3.5million, and went on to make 60 appearances over four and a half years at the club.

Loan spells at Coventry and Queens Park Rangers between 2020 and 2022 meant he didn’t feature for the Canaries until the 2022-23 season.

Last time out, he made 34 appearances across all competitions, although 14 of those appearances came from the bench.

The decision to leave Norwich came due to the lack of regular game time.

Sheffield United’s relegation from the Premier League has left them scrambling to rebuild their squad ahead of the new season, with McCallum the latest new arrival.

Jamie Shackleton has moved to Bramall Lane already after leaving Leeds United, kickstarting what is expected to be a busy summer for the Blades.

The arrival of McCallum on a free transfer has seen another problem position dealt with early in the window, with Chris Wilder keen to address the key issues in his squad.
