Scales tipped for ‘big role’ at Celtic after ‘amazing’ league debut – pundit

Frank McAvennie has praised the Celtic recruitment team and the management of Ange Postecoglou following Liam Scales’ impressive Premiership debut.

The former Hoops hitman, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, was thrilled by the defender’s performance.

Scales, 23, scored on his first Premiership outing, adding Celtic’s third in a 3-0 win over Dundee United on 5 December.

He joined Celtic last summer (2021) after making 51 appearances for Shamrock Rovers.

Ahead of the Dundee United clash, Scales had made nine appearances for the Hoops but none of them came in the league.

McAvennie insists Postecoglou now has another valuable option at his disposal.

“I’m delighted for the boy, what an amazing debut,” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“It’s great to see a young player like that get a chance and take it with both hands.

“He’s made a name for himself which means Ange can’t ignore him now.

“You have to credit him as well. Clearly, Scales hasn’t been getting game time in the league for a reason.

“He’s been brought in at the right time and Celtic have seen the benefit of that.

“He will only take confidence from it. Well done to the scouting department as well.

“Hopefully he uses this to push on over the coming months, he could play a big role. If he does then Ange has another option in that team.”

David Turnbull and Tom Rogic scored Celtic’s other goals in the win over Dundee United.

This kept them four points behind league leaders Rangers.

In other news, Celtic are plotting to replace a 2021 signing already after a Sky update.
