'He would have scored six against Progres' - Sutton burns Rangers fans in Twitter exchange as he hails Celtic ace

By Harry Sykes

Chris Sutton has claimed on Twitter that Celtic’s Leigh Griffiths would have scored six goals against the Luxembourg minnows that dumped Rangers out of the Europa League.

Former Hoops striker Sutton delivered a ringing endorsement of Griffiths in the wake of his superb performance for the club in their 5-0 Champions League play off first-leg demolition of FC Astana on Wednesday night.

A brace from Scott Sinclair and a strike from James Forrest along with two own goals put the Hoops in control of the tie but it was Griffiths who stood out with an outstanding line-leading display in which he contributed assists to three of the goals.

BT Sport pundit Sutton insisted in the immediate aftermath of the match that the former Wolves striker, 26, would “tear up the Premier League” and he returned to the theme in a Twitter exchange with football fans on Thursday morning.

Following criticism of Griffiths as a flat-track bully from a Rangers fan, Sutton replied on his personal Twitter account that the forward “would have scored six” against Progres Niederkorn, the minnows who eliminated Rangers in a humiliating Europa League qualifier at the start of last month.

Another supporter attempted to belittle the standards of the Scottish Premiership by claiming it is inferior to the English Championship.

Sutton hit back with another smart put-down, explaining how ex-Rangers strikers Joe Garner and Martyn Waghorn, both of whom failed to set the SPL alight last season, are now scoring goals for fun at Ipswich Town.

Scotland international Griffiths has scored four goals and supplied five assists for Celtic this season and has now scored 89 goals in 150 matches for the club.

He is back to his best after suffering calf problems in the early weeks of the season.
