'Guff', 'Absolutely dire' - Scotland fans destroy Celtic player after his display in win against Malta

By Harry Sykes

Scotland fans took to Twitter to destroy James Forrest for his performance in the team’s World Cup qualifier win against Malta on Monday night.

Gordon Strachan’s side secured their second win in four days with a 2-0 triumph at Hampden Park.

Goals from Christophe Berra and Leigh Griffiths enabled Scotland to keep alive their hopes of a place in the qualifier play-offs ahead of the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

Celtic’s Forrest played the full 90 minutes of the clash at a half-empty Hampden as Strachan selected six of the players from Brendan Rodgers’ all-conquering team in his starting XI.

But the Tartan Army were unimpressed with the display of the Hoops academy product, 26, who was used on the flank.

Here is a selection of their messages on Twitter:

Scotland’s win has taken their points tally to 14 from eight qualifying matches.

Slovakia’s 2-1 defeat to England means Strachan’s side are only one point adrift of the second team in Group F.

But Slovenia’s hammering of Lithuania leaves Scotland fourth in the group on goal difference.

In other Celtic news, Rangers would storm to the SPL title if they had been successful in their deadline-day pursuit of a £45,000-a-week striker.
