Scott Arfield set to agree deal amid ‘big’ Rangers claim – expert
Alan Hutton has insisted Rangers have to keep hold of Scott Arfield next season.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Gers right-back stressed the importance of holding on to experienced players like Arfield to have in the dressing room.
The 34-year-old’s current contract expires at the end of the season, alongside seven other senior players.
On 3 March, Football Insider revealed that the midfielder is expected to agree an extension after holding talks with the club.
Light Blues boss Michael Beale values Arfield’s experience and leadership and is hoping to keep hold of him next season.
As shown on Viaplay Sports (12 March), the Canada international scored the final goal in the Gers’ 3-0 win over Raith Rovers in the Scottish Cup quarter-final on Sunday (12 March).
Despite starting on the bench, Arfield was subbed on in the second half and quickly found the back of the net.
When asked what the midfielder’s role will be next season, Hutton told Football Insider: “He will be a squad player.
“It is no sleight on him. He has done unbelievably well for Rangers and he is that one player that gives you something a little bit different, those runs from midfield in behind.
“He has come up with some important goals in big moments. So it does not surprise me that they are rewarding him with a new contract.

“If you look at some of the experienced players that will be leaving, I do not think it is a good idea to get rid of everybody. I think you need those guys within the dressing room who know what it is all about and he definitely fits that bill.
“So I am not really surprised that they want to keep hold of him.“
