Scott Brown in contention for first manager’s job in Scottish Premiership after sack news

Aberdeen have now relieved Jimmy Thelin of his duties after a shocking start to the 2025-26 campaign.

The Dons currently sit eighth in the Scottish Premiership and are without a win in their last five matches in what has been a terrible few months for Aberdeen.

Despite Thelin guiding Aberdeen to a shock Scottish Cup victory last season, the board’s patience with the Swede ran out after the 1-0 defeat to Falkirk on the weekend.

As a result, Aberdeen announced on 4 January that Thelin had been sacked, with Scott Brown quickly becoming one of the favourites for the job.

Scott Brown 5/1 to become Aberdeen manager

Brown is currently the manager of Ayr United and has the side in the playoffs in the Scottish Championship at present.

Taking over in 2024, he has overseen a highly successful period at the Honest Men.

To date, he has won 46.7 per cent of his matches and is looking to finally return the side to the top-flight for the first time since 1978.

Now, Brown is the second-favourite for the Aberdeen job, in what would be his first managerial position in the Scottish Premiership.

One bookmaker has Brown as 5/1 to take over next, with current St Mirren manager Stephen Robinson the favourite at 5/2.

The Buddies boss has overseen a fantastic campaign to date, with St Mirren beating Celtic 3-1 in the Premier Sports Cup final last month.

Who else is in the running to be the Aberdeen manager?

Next is Jens Berthel Askou at 8/1, with the Motherwell manager overseeing an excellent campaign to date in the Scottish Premiership, with the side currently fourth in the table.

Recently, the Steelmen have beaten Celtic 2-0 and only narrowly lost 1-0 to Rangers at Ibrox towards the end of 2025.

From here, potential outsiders include Steven Naismith, John McGlynn and Simon Rusk.

Each one of these are priced at 10/1 to become the next Aberdeen manager, with the bookies making it clear that Robinson is the comfortable favourite as it stands.
