Sean Dyche identifies 'breakthrough' moment for Newcastle ahead of Burnley clash

By Russell Edge

Burnley manager Sean Dyche has said that Newcastle United’s “breakthrough” moment this season was the closing of the summer transfer window.

The Magpies endured a difficult time in their hunt to recruit new talent, missing out on targets such as Tammy Abraham, as boss Rafael Benitez publically voiced his frustrations.

However the Spanish manager still managed to bring in six new faces through the door at St James’ Park, and each of them have played a role in the Magpies’ impressive start to the season, having secured promotion from the Championship in their title winning campaign.

However they suffered a stuttering opening couple of matches, losing to Tottenham, Huddersfield in the league and Nottingham Forest in the League Cup before overcoming West Ham 3-0 at St James’ Park.

Dyche believes that the closing of the transfer window, with all four of those matches played before deadline day, was the turning point for the club and ensured players and staff settled down to focus on the job at hand.

Speaking ahead of Burnley’s clash against the Magpies on Monday, he was quoted by the Chronicle on the live blog (26/10, 14:06) on their website as saying: “The biggest breakthrough for Newcastle was the transfer window closing.

“Everything then seemed to calm down and they could get on with it with the players they have got.

“They have a good solid structure and shape with Rafa, which he is renowned for.

“Rafa also has good players, players who want to do well in this division.

“It will be a difficult game, as they all are, and we will have to be on top of our game again.”

Newcastle travel to Turf Moor sitting in seventh place in the top flight, just one place and one point ahead of their opposition on Monday night.

They come into the game having seen off Crystal Palace at St James’ Park in their last outing thanks to a late Mikel Merino header, while Burnley were beaten 3-0 away at Manchester City.

In other Newcastle United news, the club are lining up a move for a midfield maestro which would break their transfer record.
