Everton fringe player attracting host of PL clubs, will leave in summer - report

By Danny Wright

Everton striker Arouna Kone is attracting attention from a number of Premier League clubs, according to a report.

The Liverpool Echo claims that the 33-year-old will be released from the Merseyside club at the end of his season when his contract expires and is already on the radar of a few teams.

Crystal Palace almost signed the senior Everton player on transfer deadline day in January, but since that move fell through, Kone has played just 18 minutes of first-team football.

It is understood that Ronald Koeman is looking to thin out his squad in the summer and Kone will be one of a number of victims to face the Dutchman’s axe.

The former PSV and Sevilla striker is still aiming to play for a team in the top-flight, despite a knee injury hampering his final season at Goodison Park, leading him to play just seven times in all competitions this season, scoring two goals.

Kone’s appeaerance as a substitute in the 3-0 loss to Chelsea on Sunday was the first time he had played any Premier League football since September.

He joined the Toffees from Wigan in 2013 and has found the net ten times for the club in a total of 60 appearances.

The experienced striker has earned 39 caps for the Ivory Coast national team and has scored nine goals.

Football Insider Verdict

Kone’s time at Goodison Park has definitely been a tough one due to the number of injuries he has had to endure, but it makes a lot of sense for Everton to release him when his deal expires. The 33-year-old might still have something to offer for another Premier League club, but it will be more than likely a team towards the bottom end of the table rather than one that is looking to secure even a mid-table finish. Championship teams should also be keeping track of the former Wigan man, because he could still prove a worthy striker in the league below.

In other Everton news, the club have been made favourites to sign this 26-year-old midfielder.
