Senior Newcastle duo in heated training ground bust-up, one player suffers injury - report
By Danny Wright
Newcastle United duo Jamaal Lascelles and Mohamed Diame had to be separated after a bust-up in a training session on Thursday, according to a report.
The Daily Mail claims that Jonjo Shelvey had to act as peacemaker as the senior players were involved in a heated exchange as punches were thrown after club captain Lascelles described Diame as being “lazy”.
It is understood that Shelvey suffered a broken hand as he separated the pair and is now wearing a cast, however he should be available for Newcastle’s clash with Southampton next weekend.
Lascelles was confirmed to have penned a new long-term contract at St. James’ Park just a day after this reported training ground scuffle.
The centre-back has been a pivotal part of Rafa Benitez’s squad this term, leading there to be talk about him being handed a potential England call up in the near future.
Diame hasn’t been as crucial to the Newcastle side this season as he was last when they won the Championship title and earned promotion to the Premier League.
The Senegal international is yet to start a league game this campaign, making just five appearances off the bench.
It remains to be seen whether any action with be taken by the Newcastle hierarchy after this heated exchange.
