Senior trio axed in Guardiola 4-2-3-1: Manchester City best possible XI to face Celtic

By Will Butcher

Pep Guardiola should give Leroy Sane his second Manchester City start on Wednesday night in their Champions League group C encounter against Celtic.

The 20-year-old’s pace could prove vital as Celtic are expected to start speed merchant Cristian Gamboa at right-back, and the German international could be drafted in over Nolito who is not renowned for his speed.

Former Schalke attacker Sane could come in as one of three changes that former Barcelona boss Guardiola makes to the side that beat Swansea 3-1 on the weekend.

Full-back duo Gael Clichy and Pablo Zabaleta could also be drafted in for their defensive capabilities, over more attacking defenders Bacary Sagna and Aleksander Kolarov.

Former City star Scott Sinclair is currently enjoying a superb spell of goalscoring form for Celtic after moving north from Aston Villa this summer, and Guardiola will look to use Zabaleta’s knowledge of playing with Sinclair at Eastlands to nullify the 27-year-old.

Despite not being the best going forward, Clichy will also be expected to cope with skillful winger James Forrest at left-back.

Captain Vincent Kompany continues to struggle with injury as he joins injured duo Kevin De Bruyne and Fabian Delph on the treatment list.

Celtic will be looking to pack the midfield and frustrate City, but with the attacking quartet of Sane, David Silva, Raheem Sterling and Sergio Aguero, Brendan Rodgers’ defence faces an uphill battle.

In other Celtic news, Rodgers has revealed this contract clause ahead of Wednesday night’s match.
