Sergio Gomez set for lengthy spell on Man City sidelines after development – pundit
Frank McAvennie has suggested Sergio Gomez could be axed from the Man City side indefinitely.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former West Ham striker said Gomez wasted his opportunity to “shine” by getting sent off against FC Copenhagen on Tuesday (11 October).
As shown on BT Sport (11 October), the 22-year-old hauled down Hakon Arnar Haraldsson in the penalty area in the first half.
Referee Artur Dias Soares was instructed by the VAR official to have another look at the incident and the defender was given his marching orders.
The game ended in a goalless draw but City still secured a place in the last 16 of the Champions League.
Gomez has made eight appearances for the Sky Blues since his arrival from RSC Anderlecht in the summer.
He has only started three games under Pep Guardiola.
McAvennie suggested the left-back might have ruined his chances in Guardiola’s side.
“Pep will not be happy with the red card,” he told Football Insider.
“It was his chance to go and shine and he did not do it. He will not be happy.
“We might not see him again to be honest. I think that is how ruthless Pep is, you just might not see him again. I will watch that with interest.“

Gomez made 49 appearances for Anderlecht across all competitions last season.
In those outings he scored seven goals and provided 15 assists.
