Serie A giants plot loan swoop for Arsenal first teamer - report

By Abigail Withey

Serie A side Inter Milan want to bring Arsenal defender Shkodran Mustafi to the club this summer in a season-long loan deal, according to a report.

The Mirror has revealed that the Italian club are focused on signing the 25-year-old on loan before making him a permanent addition in a deal worth around £20million.

The newspaper claims that the Serie A champions Juventus have also made an enquiry into signing the centre-back.

It is understood that Inter believe they can complete a deal with the Gunners by next week before the transfer window closes.

The German international moved to the Emirates from Valencia in a deal worth close to £37 million last summer and made a total of 38 appearances in his debut season with the north London club.

Mustafi missed a total of 11 games for the Gunners during his first campaign after suffering from a number of niggling injuries, as well as a concussion which meant he missed the FA Cup final.

The former Everton academy star returned to the squad for the full 90 minutes against Stoke City, which ended in disappointment for Arsene Wenger’s side.

Football Insider verdict

Mustafi looked the part for large parts of last season but something seems to have gone wrong. Getting Laurent Koscielny back will be huge for Arsenal as no one else seems to be able to take charge but that’s worrying when you look at Mustafi, a player that cost Wenger £37million. Wenger has said he needs to lose players before the transfer window slams shut but we’d be really surprised if it was Mustafi. They need more bodies in defence if anything, although Sead Kolasinac was a brilliant addition on a free. We see this as a non-starter.
