Mexico legend Carlos Hermosillo has torn into Rangers midfielder Carlos Pena for his awful display on loan at Cruz Azul in the 2-1 defeat to America in the Mexico City derby.
Pedro Caixinha decided to take Pena, 28, off at half-time due to his poor performance in what was his first start in two months after suffering an ankle injury.
Ex-Gers boss Caixinha was made to rue his decision to start the midfielder after a lacklustre 45 minutes which led to huge criticism from former Mexico international striker Hermosillo, who blasted both the player and manager after the game.
“Carlos Pena’s performance was a shameful disgrace. I find it utterly shameful Pena is actually in this team,” he said, as quoted by the Daily Record.
“But it’s more the fault of the coach who actually picks him.”
Pena has managed to make just seven appearances since moving to Cruz Azul in January, starting just twice in the Liga MX.
Football Insider verdict
Caixinha must surely be getting close to being sacked for the second time this season as that defeat to rivals America left Cruz Azul just three points away from bottom of the table. His decision to sign Pena for the second time in a matter of months was simply baffling having witnessed how poorly the midfielder had played at Rangers. Pena’s arrival at Ibrox for over £2million is simply unforgivable and given his form back in Mexico there’s no way that the Light Blues will get anywhere near back what they spent on him last year. At least with Mark Allen now in charge of transfers this should not happen again.
