Shearer delivers Twitter verdict on Newcastle display against Southampton

By Aramide Oladipo

Alan Shearer believes that Newcastle United should be pleased after drawing to Southampton in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon.

The Magpies were held to an entertaining 2-2 draw at St Mary’s despite taking the lead on two occasions thanks to goals from Isaac Hayden and Ayoze Perez.

The hosts managed to earn a valuable point as striker Manono Gabbiadini notched up a brace, including an equaliser with 15 minutes to go.

Shearer delivered his verdict on the game on his personal Twitter account after the game and claimed that Newcastle should be positive about the eventual outcome.

The Magpies have struggled to overcome the Saints in the Premier League in recent years, failing to beat them home or away since the 2012-13 campaign.

The result means that Rafa Benitez’s side are currently lying in ninth position in the league table and they are only four points behind the Champions League places.

Newcastle have enjoyed a fantastic return to top-flight football, sitting in a higher position in the table than fellow newly-promoted sides Huddersfield Town and Brighton.

The Tyneside club will look to secure three points next weekend when they welcome bottom of the table Crystal Palace to St James’ Park in the Premier League.
