‘More bad news’ – Sheffield Wednesday set for fresh setback as vultures circle
Sheffield Wednesday are continuing to suffer a difficult transfer window amid Dejphon Chansiri’s failing ownership.
After Chansiri failed to pay the Owls squad on time for two consecutive months, Djeidi Gassama joined Rangers, while Josh Windass moved to Wrexham on a free transfer after terminating his contract at Hillsborough.
Danny Rohl’s men are now facing the prospect of suffering further high-profile departures before facing Leicester City in their Championship opener on 10 August.
Amid Wednesday’s financial struggles, striker Michael Smith joined Preston North End, where he has linked up with former Sheffield United boss Paul Heckingbottom.

Callum Paterson eyed by Oxford United in further Sheffield Wednesday blow
Versatile striker Callum Paterson has been training with Sheffield Wednesday after his contract with the South Yorkshire outfit expired at the end of last season.
The Sheffield Star’s Joe Crann revealed via X on Monday, 28 July: “Sounds like more bad news coming for SWFC.
“Understand that MK Dons and Oxford United are both making a big push to try and sign Callum Paterson.
“Both have the advantage of having no wage cap to contend with.”
Paterson set to favour Oxford move
Football Insider verdict
Paterson has been an exceptional servant for Sheffield Wednesday over the years, after joining from Cardiff City in 2020.
Callum Paterson stats | Championship 2024/25 |
Appearances | 27 |
Goals | 6 |
Assists | 2 |
The 17-cap Scotland international scored five goals and produced one assist in 25 League One appearances in 2022/23, as the Hillsborough club clinched promotion from the third tier.
He went on to help Rohl’s men successfully avoid relegation from the Championship in 2023/24, before notching eight goals and two assists across all competitions last term.
But Paterson will likely be eager to join a fellow second-tier club that enjoy greater financial stability than the Owls, amid interest from Oxford.
The 30-year-old should favour moving to Gary Rowett’s side over joining MK Dons as he still has a lot to offer at Championship level, and should not entertain dropping to League Two, even though the Buckinghamshire club are aspiring to return to League One.
Meanwhile, Wednesday will suffer if Paterson leaves, having already witnessed the exits of fellow attackers Windass and Gassama.
