‘Sheffield Wednesday plot major off-field change’: ‘Waste of space’

Sheffield Wednesday are set to witness off-field changes this summer as the South Yorkshire club prepare for the 2025/26 Championship campaign.

The Owls endured an inconsistent 2024/25 season and eventually finished 12th in the second tier after witnessing their playoff chances slip away.

Danny Rohl’s men ended the Championship season with a three-game unbeaten run after winning 2-1 against Middlesbrough on 21 April before settling for 1-1 draws with Portsmouth and Watford in their final two fixtures.

Meanwhile, Wednesday’s top goal scorer, Josh Windass, has spoken out on the speculation that he could be joining La Liga side Valencia.

Sheffield Wednesday set to lay new pitch at Hillsborough

Rohl could be set to leave South Yorkshire this summer, and has been eyed by Scottish Premiership giants Rangers.

Meanwhile, as reported by the Sheffield Star [23 May], the Wednesday faithful will be able to notice that the Championship club will have improved their pitch by next term.

Speaking to the Owls’ media team, head groundsperson Lee Jackson also revealed that the Hillsborough club are making improvements to their training ground on Middlewood Road: “I’ve had a look at it in terms of what is around the pitch.

“A lot of it is wasted space and space that gets damaged with our stuff in terms of mowers on grass in front of advertising boards and what have you.

“So we’re going to standardise that around the edge. The difference this time is that because of the whole sustainability aspect of rubber crumbing on artificial pitches, we’re taking that away completely.

“We’re taking the technology on non-infill carpets, without the rubber in, which has come on significantly. That’s going in at the academy as well this week and next week. So that will give us a better feel for the players.”

Wednesday would be devastated to lose Rohl

Rohl may not be joining Rangers, as former Bears boss Steven Gerrard has emerged as the frontrunner to take the managerial reins at Ibrox.

However, Wednesday would still be lucky if the German is still in the dugout at Hillsborough by the beginning of next season.

Rohl did an incredible job to keep the men in blue and white in the Championship following a difficult 2023/24 campaign in which they looked destined to suffer relegation before the 36-year-old arrived and turned their season around.

He then steered the South Yorkshire outfit to a comfortable mid-table finish despite the challenges posed by Dejphon Chansiri’s often turbulent ownership.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, Rohl’s exploits in the Wednesday dugout have caught the eye, while Football Insider previously revealed that the former Germany assistant manager would be open to taking the Leicester City job.

If Rohl leaves the Owls, they could be in for a difficult Championship campaign without his services.
