‘Sheffield Wednesday wage saga takes fresh twist as crucial deadline looms’
Sheffield Wednesday could soon face severe consequences while Dejphon Chansiri’s failing ownership remains ongoing.
Thai businessman Chansiri failed to pay Sheffield Wednesday’s May wage bill on time, leading to plenty of uncertainty at Hillsborough.
As a result, Owls boss Danny Rohl will likely leave Hillsborough amid the financial turmoil surrounding the Championship club.
The German steered the South Yorkshire outfit to a comfortable mid-table finish last season, despite his challenging relationship with Chansiri.

Sheffield Wednesday close to missing another payment deadline
Wednesday’s monetary hardship could lead to several player exits, while star man Barry Bannan is out of contract this summer.
Meanwhile, according to the Sheffield Star [16 June], Rohl’s men remain under embargo thanks to the unpaid wages at Hillsborough.
The Star’s report adds that some players are thought to have been paid in the last few days, while coaches and non-playing staff are all believed to have received last month’s wages.
However, most of the senior squad are reportedly unpaid, and could leave the Championship club on a free transfer at the end of the month.
FIFA’s regulations say that if players endure two consecutive months without being paid, they can hand in a 15-day notice period and leave as a free agent.

Chansiri must sell Sheffield Wednesday
Despite his ongoing inability to fulfil his financial obligations, Chansiri rejected two offers to buy Sheffield Wednesday from an American consortium consisting of business people and professional athletes.

But unless the Owls owner sells the Championship outfit this summer, the South Yorkshire club could be staring down the barrel at suffering relegation back to League One for the first time since winning promotion from the third tier in 2023.
Former Owls player and manager Chris Turner warned that Sheffield Wednesday have no future under Chansiri, epitomising that the Thai businessman must sell the second-tier club.
Should Chansiri fail to meet his wage obligations this month, Wednesday’s Championship rivals will likely take advantage of the situation and acquire both tried and tested quality players, such as Josh Windass, and blossoming young talents, such as Gabriel Otegbayo, on free transfers.
Meanwhile, if the current owner remains in place, he will find it difficult to replace Rohl once the German leaves.
