Sheffield Wednesday’s Josh Windass opens up on shock interest from Spanish giants: ‘We’ll see’

Sheffield Wednesday ace Josh Windass has responded to links with a move to La Liga side Valencia.

The versatile forward enjoyed a strong Championship campaign with the Owls, notching 13 goals and five assists in 44 second-tier outings.

Windass particularly caught the eye when he scored a long-range stunner against Derby County on New Year’s Day, and scored Wednesday’s final goal of the campaign in a 1-1 draw with Watford on 3 May.

The South Yorkshire club could struggle to retain some of their best talent this summer, while boss Danny Rohl had been linked with a move to Rangers amid the uncertainty surrounding his future at Hillsborough.

Windass joined Sheffield Wednesday from Wigan Athletic back in 2020 and has established himself as a key figure for the Owls.

Meanwhile, speaking to the Open Goal podcast [20 May], the 31-year-old has reacted to the fact he has been linked with Valencia: “I don’t know anything about that to be honest.

“That’ll be because of Carlos (Corberan). I was close to going to West Brom last summer because I was a free transfer, and I was close to going to West Brom and ended up staying at Sheffield Wednesday.”

Windass added: “I’ve got another year but we’ll see (what happens).”

Sheffield Wednesday will be eager to retain Windass

The reports linking Windass with a move to Valencia have come as a shock, given the fact that he is a 31-year-old who has never played in the Premier League, or indeed any top-flight division since representing Rangers in the Scottish Premiership back in 2018/19.

But as alluded to by the Wednesday forward, Valencia boss Corberan, formerly of West Brom, is familiar with him.

Meanwhile, the Owls could be in for a tough summer, as even though Rangers are now closing in on Steven Gerrard, Rohl appears likely to quit Hillsborough.

But while the South Yorkshire side may be resigned to losing the German, they will not want to lose the likes of Windass, who has been a class act in the Championship.

After helping the Hillsborough outfit achieve second-tier survival by scoring six goals during the 2023/24 campaign, he went on to more than double that tally this term.
