‘Sheffield Wednesday handed financial boost as Man City ease Dejphon Chansiri chaos’

Manchester City have handed Sheffield Wednesday some financial respite as the Championship club continue to suffer from owner Dejphon Chansiri’s mismanagement.

Chansiri failed to pay player and staff wages, leaving the South Yorkshire side in a precarious position ahead of next season.

Sheffield Wednesday have been charged with multiple breaches of the EFL’s regulations thanks to the Thai businessman’s major blunder.

Meanwhile, boss Danny Rohl is set to leave the Owls after steering the South Yorkshire outfit to a comfortable 12th-place finish.

Manchester City sign Sheffield Wednesday youngster Caelan Cadamarteri

Chansiri’s mismanagement at Hillsborough could lead to several player departures this summer, while Charlton Athletic have eyed defender Akin Famewo.

Fabrizio Romano reported via X that Manchester City have agreed a deal to sign Wednesday Under-16 striker Caelan Cadmarteri.

BBC Sheffield’s Rob Staton responded to the news as he posted: “This will obviously ease the financial situation at Sheffield Wednesday.”

Sheffield Wednesday could lose Callum Paterson and Barry Bannan

Courtesy of their financial woes, the South Yorkshire outfit are facing serious difficulty retaining players who are out of contract this summer, as fullback Pol Valentin is set to join fellow Championship side Preston North End on a free transfer.

Bannan could leave Wednesday

While Famewo could join Charlton, Barry Bannan and Callum Paterson could leave Sheffield Wednesday, too, amid an embargo imposed by the EFL restricting the Hillsborough side’s squad to 23 players.

The duo are available on free transfers this summer, and could be attractive options for Championship rivals to sign, courtesy of their rich experience at second-tier level.

Wednesday supporters could be distraught to see the back of Bannan, as the former Aston Villa and Crystal Palace man has given the Owls 10 years of exemplary service.

The former Scotland international, who scored four Championship goals in 2024/25, is a modern-day Hillsborough great, and his departure could epitomise the severe consequences of Chansiri’s financial misdemeanours.
