Exclusive: Wednesday set sights on signing ex-Elland Road player binned by Bielsa

Sheffield Wednesday have set their sights on ex-Leeds United midfielder Madger Gomes after he ignited his career in Yorkshire this season, Football Insider can reveal.

The 23-year-old Spaniard has made a big impact for the League One promotion-chasing outfit Doncaster Rovers.

A Wednesday source has told Football Insider that the club have sent scouts to regularly watch Gomes this season and have been impressed by his performances.

The Yorkshire club’s talent-spotters have delivered glowing reports about the defensive midfielder and believe he is ready to make the step up to the Championship next season.

This comes after Football Insider revealed this summer that Wednesday are also keeping close tabs on West Ham loan star Nathan Holland.

Like the Hammers winger, Gomes is also plying his trade in England’s third tier and is now playing the best football of his career.

Garry Monk’s side are eyeing a permanent move for the product of the Liverpool academy.

He joined the Premier League giants from Villarreal in his native Spain in 2014 but left Anfield three years later without playing for the first team.

Gomes joined Leeds on a free transfer but made just two senior appearances in early season before being sold as soon as Marcelo Bielsa took over as manager in the summer of 2018.

Ex-Leeds boss Monk has been alerted by the performances of Gomes, who joined Doncaster on a two-year deal last summer.

He has made 13 league starts among 28 appearances in all competitions this season.

In other Leeds United news, it can be REVEALED that the club are closing in on £5million signing amid major behind-the-scenes development.
