Tim Sherwood has revealed that he believes Dele Alli is lucky to be at Tottenham under Mauricio Pochettino because if he was at Chelsea or Manchester City he would have been dropped and “you’d never see him again”.
The former Tottenham manager was on BT Sport Score and defended the Spurs midfielder over his lack of league goals this season.
The 48-year-old shared that people expect a lot Alli but people need to understand he is still “developing” and learning his trade.
Sherwood also added that everyone goes through a “dry patch” and the midfielder was simply just experiencing his.
The unemployed manager did go on to say that it would be worse for the 21-year-old if he had a different manager or was at another club.
“Fortunately for this kid he has got a manager who backs him”, admitted Sherwood before adding, “if he was at Chelsea now or Manchester City, you have a barren spell you’d never see him again.”
Alli has only scored three goals in 14 Premier League appearances this season, whereas last season he ended up grabbing 18 league goals.
The midfielder isn’t the only Tottenham player to garner criticism this season, as the team have failed to win any of their last four league games.
This run of games included a loss to bitter rivals Arsenal in the north London derby and has seen Mauricio Pochettino already declare his team’s title ambitions effectively dead.
Spurs are 15 points behind league leaders Manchester City, but the current leaders could extend the gap to 18 points with victory over West Ham on Sunday.
