‘Shocking…It’s Criminal, Really’ – Exclusive: Pundit fumes over what he’s seen at Tottenham

Alan Hutton has been left fuming with Jose Mourinho after watching Tottenham lose to both Brighton and Liverpool.

The former Spurs and Scotland defender, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, has ripped into the Portuguese boss’ “shocking” tactics against the Seagulls and the Reds.

The Lilywhites started with a back-five in the 3-1 defeat to Liverpool and the 1-0 loss away at Brighton on Sunday.

Mourinho has rotated between his defensive options at both centre-back and wing-back, with the likes of Moussa Sissoko and Matt Doherty both utilised in makeshift roles.

Meanwhile, Toby Alderweireld and Davinson Sanchez both returned to the heart of the defence against Brighton at the expense of Eric Dier and Ben Davies – the latter of which was pushed up to play as a left-sided wing-back.

Hutton has insisted Spurs have a good enough squad to be pushing for a top-four finish this season and suggested the Portuguese boss’ tactics were letting his players down.

Hutton told Football Insider“You’ve got me started here. If you look, their recent performances have been shocking.

“I mean, going to Brighton and playing five at the back, for me, with the talent that you’ve got, it’s criminal really.

“I understand the way Jose plays but come on. I genuinely believe that they’ve got a squad that can compete for the top four but I don’t think they play the right way.

“They’ve started the last two games with five at the back, changed at half-time when it’s not quite worked out. I understand that he plays counter-attacking football but it’s so defensive.

“You’ve got such a good team, I genuinely don’t get it.”
