‘Sickening, embarrassing’ – Crystal Palace fans explode at ‘disaster’ deadline day twist

Crystal Palace fans have been left raging at their recruitment team after the latest twist on what has been a dramatic transfer deadline day.

Jean-Philippe Mateta’s move to AC Milan collapsed, placing Jorgen Strand Larsen‘s arrival at risk although that has now been confirmed, and they failed to replace Marc Guehi.

However, the cherry on top for the frustrated Eagles fans came as Palace agreed a deadline-busting £20million deal to sign Everton winger Dwight McNeil.

Football Insider first revealed earlier in the day that Crystal Palace were exploring a move for McNeil, but no formal bid had been made as they eyed other areas.

However, shortly before the 7pm deadline, reports claimed the 26-year-old was undergoing a medical after the clubs came to an agreement over the terms.

Crystal Palace close in on Dwight McNeil signing

The addition of a new wide-man had not been at the top of the Eagles’ list of priorities today, with a centre-back and striker their priority options.

However, they have been prepared to move for any deals which presented themselves in the late stages, and McNeil has been a long-term target at Selhurst Park.

Any deal for the 26-year-old depended on whether Everton are able to bring in a replacement as David Moyes is reluctant to weaken his squad at this late stage.

With Everton closing in on the signing of Tyrique George, the door opened for his departure, and Palace have now moved quickly to reach an agreement.

Fans explode as McNeil medical begins

Palace fans have been less than impressed with the club’s late activity, having gone into the day hoping for a new striker, centre-back and potentially a midfielder.

Despite countless links with different options in all three positions, a late move for McNeil given their squad depth out wide has raised alarm bells.

Many have gone as far as to suggest Palace could be relegated, with five points separating them from the drop zone, as the business was labelled “sickening” and “embarrassing”.
