Silas Andersen: Why Celtic and Rangers may remain favourites despite Wolves plot for deal

Silas Andersen is likely to be a common name linked with British clubs once again this summer, after Celtic and Rangers both targeted him in January.

Premier League side Wolves have now shown an interest in signing the BK Hacken star this summer, despite their likely relegation to the Championship for next term.

The Swedish outfit recently increased their power regarding their star midfielder’s future by tying him down to a new contract, but a deal could still be on the table ahead of next term, given the level of interest that has mounted in him.

Andersen is on the radar of several clubs from across the UK as we head towards another transfer window, and it is highly unlikely that the Old Firm duo have cooled their desire to strike a deal for him at all.

Celtic’s transfer plans are set to incorporate a significant overhaul of their playing squad alongside the appointment of a new manager this summer, and the Dane could yet become part of that.

Champions League possibility boosts Celtic and Rangers hopes

Andersen’s stock has continued to rise since he was linked with a move to the Scottish Premiership in the winter, and as a result, it is no surprise to now see his name being attached to Premier League clubs.

Wolves have already added the 21-year-old to their shortlist of summer targets, according to Swedish outlet Aftonbladet, while they are “closely monitoring” him with the view of trying to strike a deal.

Ordinarily, when a Premier League club is interested, it can prove a major obstacle for the likes of Celtic and Rangers, and one that is often extremely difficult to overcome.

However, given the pair’s current position in the title race, they may still be the favourites to land Andersen this summer, despite Wolves eyeing up a transfer.

At least one of the Old Firm sides will gain a place in qualifying for the Champions League for next season, as they are currently battling it out with Hearts at the top of the table.

That could have a crucial say in where Andersen sees his future in the coming months, as the opportunity to play in the Champions League can open all manner of pathways for a player in the following years.

Wolves are heading in the wrong direction for that, while it remains possible that one or both of Celtic and Rangers could even be able to offer a spot in the league phase for next term.

How much will it cost to sign Silas Andersen?

Football Insider revealed back in January that it would take a significant fee for either Celtic or Rangers to sign Andersen, as Hacken were reluctant to lose him in the middle of the season.

That remains the case as we head towards the summer off-season, and the recent contract extension for the youngster is set to hand even more bargaining power to his current club.

There was plenty of talk regarding Andersen’s valuation sitting in excess of the £6million mark during the winter window, and that will surely have only increased after he penned his new deal.

Celtic and Rangers are certainly capable of spending that level of money on a player, but they would have to be adamant that he is the right fit, as it would seriously affect their capabilities elsewhere in the market.
