Simms tipped to make Everton debut v Brentford after Benitez name drop - pundit

Noel Whelan has suggested Everton starlet Ellis Simms could come off the bench against Brentford to make his first-team debut.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, admitted Rafael Benitez would want the experience of Salomon Rondon or Cenk Tosun to start in place of the suspended Richarlison.

As quoted by the Liverpool Echo (25th November), Benitez name-checked Simms, 20, as a possible replacement for the Brazilian.

However, the Spaniard admitted he would likely turn to his more experienced options.

Despite that, Whelan suggested Simms could still get a chance against Brentford as a substitute.

Whelan told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “You know that you’re going to get passion and desire from young strikers.

“They’ve got that no-fear attitude, wanting to prove themselves and prove their worth and claim that spot.

“I guess sometimes that’s a difficult position to be in. Do you have a known player that’s got the experience, that could come good, in Tosun and Rondon?

“They’ve not hit the stars or set the world on fire with their performances.

“But at the same time, you’re coming up against Brentford. Very big defenders, very tall centre-halves. Do you need a Rondon or Tosun to compete for balls coming in from wide areas?

“You’ve got to put everything into perspective. Look, you’d love Calvert-Lewin up front through the middle but right now beggars can’t be choosers. He’s not available.

“What he has got is three players there. One with no fear, that’s hungry for a chance. Two that, on their day, can cause problems up against a back three of Brentford all over six foot two.

“You’ve got to weigh these ones up. I’m sure he’s probably going to go for the experience and have that young man waiting in the wings if they don’t do the job from the beginning.”

Simms is yet to make his senior debut for Everton.

However, he has been on the bench three times this season, including in last weekend’s defeat to Manchester City.
