Six axed in Murty 4-4-2: Rangers best possible XI to face St. Johnstone

COMMENT By Harvey Byrne

Graeme Murty must change his personnel and formation for the St. Johnstone clash at Ibrox on Wednesday and as many as six players should be axed from the team.

The Ibrox giants are on an excusable run of form for a club of their size with three losses and one draw from their last four league matches.

They have also dropped down to third place in the in the league table with nine points now separating them from Aberdeen in second and Murty must bring out the changes.

Gers fans are generally of the belief that their team must start showing some aggression and fight out on the pitch and the only player that guarantees this is striker Joe Garner.

However, his lack of goals upfront means he must play with someone else upfront and the young and pacey Joe Dodoo could be the perfect player to play off the former Preston man.

This should see veteran Kenny Miller axed from the team alongside Martyn Waghorn in the forward positions.

James Tavernier and Rob Kiernan should also be chopped from the back four for the more defensively capable Clint Hill and Lee Hodson.

The back four will be vital to Rangers picking up anything after conceding a horrendous nine goals in their last four league matches and there is no place for any weak links at this stage.

Ahead of them should see the often criticised Andy Halliday and Jon Toral fall out of the side for Josh Windass and Harry Forrester.

With Forrester and Barrie McKay on either side of the pitch they will be able to switch flanks across the 90 minutes and cause full-backs a hellish hour and a half with their ability to play on both sides.

Meanwhile, with the technically gifted Windass lining up alongside Emerson Hyndman the Gers could finally control a game at home and provide good service for those upfront.

It is vital that Rangers pick up all three points against St. Johnstone in midweek and these changes could be key to the club earning their first league victory since January 28.

In other Rangers news, Clint Hill believes this senior man is working the hardest at the Gers.
