Six Newcastle United players stopping club from announcing next signing – pundit

Newcastle United must sell “five or six” players before announcing another signing.

That’s according to former Leeds United stopper Paddy Kenny, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the club’s next transfer move.

Most of Newcastle’s senior squad have returned for pre-season training ahead of the 2022-23 campaign.

This includes players such as Jamal Lewis and Ciaran Clark, who were not included in the club’s Premier League squad for the second half of the 2021-22 season.

Jeff Hendrick has also returned to the club after an underwhelming loan spell at QPR.

After the arrivals of Matt Targett, Nick Pope and Sven Botman, Kenny insists Newcastle must focus on outgoings.

“Listen, some players are going to have to move on,” Kenny told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“They have a massive squad there and you look through some of the players who are there. They can’t all stay.

“That has to be the focus now. There are a lot of players who aren’t good enough and weren’t good enough before the takeover.

“There are five or six players who probably need to go before they should be focusing on bringing another player in.

“They are taking up space on the wage bill and they just aren’t going to play, so they need to go.”

Newcastle’s defence has now been completely overhauled since the exit of Mike Ashley in October 2021.

Targett, Pope and Botman join Dan Burn and Kieran Trippier as defensive options available to Eddie Howe.
