Sky Sports pundit admonished for ‘outrageous’ Leeds United claim vs Derby

Joe Rodon’s goal to put Leeds United 1-0 up in the win over Derby saw Clinton Morrison admonished by his Sky Sports colleagues for an “outrageous” claim.

The Welsh defender put Daniel Farke’s side ahead in the 2-0 victory which sent the Whites top of the Championship, having missed an easier chance shortly before.

At the time the early slate of games were particularly short on goals so when Rodon headed home seconds after Morrison and Jess Creighton had been calling for some scoring the former striker took credit and joked the Leeds defender had thanked him while celebrating.

Speaking live on Sky Sports Soccer Saturday on 7 December Creighton said after the goal (1.10pm): “It’s almost as if that commentator’s curse thing, I said ‘no-one’s scored’ and then as soon as I shut up they actually score a goal, Leeds have gone 1-0 up Clinton.”

Morrison replied: “Yeah they listened to me, I do make sense. It’s Rodon as well. It’s like a carbon copy, it’s a better header, and it’s a more difficult header, great ball in and Rodon must have been listening to me, definitely, it’s a fantastic header into that bottom corner, 1-0 Leeds Jess.”

After Paul Merson called across the studio he added: “Did you hear that? He just lifted his top up and it said ‘Thank you Clinton, I was listening’. Ha ha ha!”

A laughing Creighton responded: “Clinton that’s absolutely terrible, outrageous.”

Host Simon Thomas then added: “Somehow, somehow, he always makes it about him. Always makes it about him.”

Football Insider opinion

After losing 1-0 to Blackburn last week (30 November) it was vital that Farke’s men got back to winning ways, so the relatively-comfortable victory at Elland Road will have been welcome for the German.

Despite the recent set back he can clearly point to Leeds United sitting top of the table as evidence that things are essentially going to plan, which is all the more satisfying when his squad has been hit by injuries this term.

Rodon, Farke and most Whites fans won’t care who takes credit for finding the breakthrough against the Rams as it set the team on the way to a crucial result.

The Whites face their opponents again before the end of the year with the return fixture on 29 December, and meetings with Middlesbrough, Preston North End, Oxford and Stoke in between.

That run of fixtures is surely looking like a major opportunity to put some daylight between themselves and main rivals Sheffield United, Burnley and Sunderland.

Boro are the only upcoming test currently in the play-off places and with the Blades facing West Brom on Sunday (8 December) Farke will hope for a helping hand from exit-linked Carlos Corberan in stopping Chris Wilder’s side from going back to the summit.
